Mowing
- Never mow more than 1/3 of the total grass height. Cutting too much of the plant at once will send the grass into shock.
- It is recommended to mow to a height of 2 inches to 3 inches.
- Change direction of mowing from one time to the next to ensure an even cut
- Keep mower blades sharp. A sign of a dull mower blade is shredded-looking grass blades.
Watering
- Water to a depth of 6 inches to ensure thorough and complete coverage.
- Do not water on a predetermined schedule. Instead, only water as needed.
- Avoid evening and late night watering. This can create conditions favorable for diseases.
Fertilizing
- It is time to apply pre-emergent to control weeds and crabgrass germination.
- A common misconception is that more is better. Always read the product label prior to applying any fertilizer. Follow the recommended application rates for your particular grass type.
- Ensure that the fertilizer is spread evenly. It is best to use some form of broadcast spreader instead of applying the fertilizer by hand.
- When using your broadcast spreader, try to apply half of the amount required in an up and down pattern, and the other half in a right angles to the first half. This helps to give your lawn a uniformed application.
